On May 30, 2025, the international convention governing the International Organization for Mediation was signed in HongKong. IOMed is a new inter-governmental organization, based in Hong Kong, whose aim is to provide a platform for the mediation of certain existing or potential conflicts (inter-states or between states and investors).
Created in 2023 at China's initiative to resolve a conflict in Africa, the organization had 19 member states at the time of its inception, and 33 to date.

This organization, which complements the UN and aspires to equal status with the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, reinforces Hong Kong's position as an international city with a world-class legal system, and confirms China's diplomatic status, trusted by a large number of states in the Global South to win international disputes.

As I explain in my book "Understanding the China-West Relationship" (2022, republished in 2024), China is increasingly assuming the role assigned to it by the size of its economy and its diplomatic and military stature.

The silence of the Western media at the announcement of the creation of the IOMed attests to the unease that China generates in the West. Its evolution from cheap supplier of gadgets that the Golden Billion can no longer live without, to that of the reformer of the international system to make it more equitable, was not anticipated in time by the West, which now has only indifference and sarcasm to counter it.
